02 / RETROFIT BATTERIES & EXPANSION MÁLAGA PROVINCE

Batteries & retrofit expansion

Already have solar panels? We add a battery to lift your self-consumption from 35% to 80% — or expand your existing system up to the legal limit of 10 kWp.

What's included

  • Technical visit to your existing installation: inverter check, battery space, electrical state
  • Battery selection compatible with your inverter (DC-coupled or AC-coupled per model)
  • Battery installation in utility room or safe ventilated location
  • Charge/discharge management configuration per your consumption profile
  • Smart meter for real-time self-consumption optimisation
  • Re-legalisation of expanded installation with Industry if applicable
  • User manual + access to integrated monitoring app

How we work

  1. Technical visit · 1h, no commitment

We review your existing installation: inverter brand, available space for battery, wiring and panel state.

  2. Technical proposal · 3-5 days

We send you which battery is compatible with your inverter, recommended capacity by night-time consumption, and itemised quote.

  3. Installation · 1 day

Team installs battery and integrates with existing system. If inverter replacement needed (rare), we tell you before signing.

  4. Re-legalisation · 15-30 days by case

If we expand power, we submit modification to Industry. If only adding battery without more kWp, communication to distributor usually suffices.

Frequently asked questions

Which inverters are compatible with retrofit batteries?

Most modern hybrid inverters (Huawei SUN2000, Sungrow SH-RT, Fronius GEN24, SolarEdge StorEdge) accept DC-coupled retrofit batteries. Older string-only inverters require AC-coupling with a separate battery inverter, which raises cost.

How much battery do I need?

Depends on your night-time consumption. A typical home with electric cooking and electric water heater needs 5-10 kWh. If you have an EV you charge at night or 24h pool pump, consider 10-15 kWh. We size it for you in the technical visit based on your bill.

How long does an LFP lithium battery last?

Modern LFP batteries (lithium iron phosphate) typically have 10-year warranty or 6,000 full cycles, whichever comes first. In normal residential use that's approximately 12-15 years of real lifespan.

Is a battery worth it on the Costa del Sol?

If you have significant night-time consumption, yes. Lifts self-consumption from 35% (no battery) to 65-80% (with 5-10 kWh battery). On the Costa del Sol with low export tariff (€0.06/kWh), storing to use yourself at €0.13/kWh always beats selling.

Do I need a permit to add a battery?

If you only add battery without increasing panel power, communication to your distributor (E-Distribución in Málaga) suffices. If you expand panels, modification to Industry registration is required. We handle this as part of standard procedure.

Can I connect a battery to an old system?

Yes, via AC-coupling with a separate battery inverter (Victron, Fronius, etc.). Cost rises by approximately a thousand euros vs DC-coupling but is viable. In the technical visit we evaluate which option fits.

What about surpluses if I have a battery?

The system prioritises: 1) direct consumption, 2) battery charging, 3) export to grid with compensation. When the battery is full and you don't consume, surpluses still export and compensate on bill.

A retrofit battery is the most efficient way to lift the economic performance of an installation that’s already producing well — you multiply your self-consumption without touching panels or structure. On the Costa del Sol, with low export tariff and high electricity price, the math typically works out even for modest 5-10 kWh batteries.

When adding a battery makes sense

The main criterion is your night-time consumption. If all your electrical load is daytime (home office, appliances only when sunny), the battery takes longer to amortise. If you have loads like electric boiler, electric water heater, EV you charge at night, or 24h pool pump, the battery pays for itself in 6-9 years even at current 2026 prices.

Compatibility with your inverter

Modern hybrid inverters (installed in recent years) typically accept DC-coupled retrofit batteries — the most efficient option. If your inverter is string-only without DC battery input, we do AC-coupling with a separate battery inverter. Difference: moderate additional cost and an extra conversion point with small loss.

In the technical visit we verify it and tell you exactly which option applies to your case. If your installation is relatively new (see installation service) it’s likely directly compatible.

Battery maintenance

LFP lithium batteries don’t require mechanical maintenance, but the system needs annual review of state of charge, completed cycles and firmware. We cover it with the maintenance plan — if you already have a plan contracted, the battery is included at no extra cost.
