Marbella: one of the best solar locations in Europe

With 1,560 kWh per kWp per year (PVGIS, European Commission data, coordinates 36.51°N / -4.88°E), Marbella produces 52% more solar energy than London (1,029 kWh/kWp) and 47% more than Berlin. This means a 5 kWp system in Marbella generates roughly 7,800 kWh per year — enough to cover the full electricity use of a four-person home with air conditioning and a heated pool.

Marbella's distinctive feature is its microclimate sheltered by Sierra Blanca, with moderate temperatures even in winter. The panels perform especially well between May and September — exactly when electricity consumption spikes from air conditioning and pools during the high season. How much does a solar installation cost in Marbella in 2026?

The average price is €850–1,300 per installed kWp (21% VAT included), turnkey. In Marbella the range tends towards the high end due to the greater complexity of installing on tall villas, slate roofs or premium materials common in areas such as Sierra Blanca or La Zagaleta.

Tax incentives in Marbella (verified)

Marbella is one of the most favourable municipalities on the Costa del Sol for solar energy thanks to its strong ICIO rebate. Below we break down each incentive with the real limitations — without the usual optimistic marketing from other installers:

Incentive Saving Conditions
95% ICIO exemption€185–370Marbella exempts 95% of the Construction Tax for solar installations. Applied for via the Town Hall website after the responsible declaration. Verified 2026.
IRPF DA 51ª (40%)up to €2,600Spanish tax residents only. Requires a pre- and post-install energy certificate (CEE, €80–250) and a ≥30% reduction in non-renewable primary energy. Primary residence only.
IRPF DA 62ª (10%)up to €500New 2026 self-consumption deduction. Requires only the CIE (no CEE). Max base €5,000. More accessible than DA 51ª but a smaller saving.
IBIMarbella does NOT rebate solar IBI (verified against Fundación Renovables). If the IBI rebate matters to you, consider Torremolinos (50%) or Vélez-Málaga (50%). Full comparison in the Málaga 2026 municipality-by-municipality IBI table.

Important disclaimer: the IRPF deductions are mutually exclusive. You must choose DA 50ª (20%), DA 51ª (40%) or DA 62ª (10%). The information above is indicative and based on RD-L 7/2026 (BOE 21/03/2026); always consult your tax advisor, especially if you are not a Spanish tax resident. We do not process subsidies — see our full subsidies guide for more context.

Housing types in Marbella and technical considerations

Marbella concentrates a residential profile that is very favourable for solar energy: villas, chalets and townhouses dominate, with large roofs, usable south orientations, and a market with the means to invest in premium equipment.

On the other hand, there are two Marbella specifics to bear in mind:

  • Slate or Arabic-tile roofs: common in areas like Sierra Blanca or La Zagaleta. They require a specific anti-uplift structure and non-perforating fixings, adding 10–15% versus a standard flat roof.
  • Communities of owners: in Puerto Banús or Las Chapas, some developments have internal rules about elements visible from outside. We handle the process with the community. In our experience, most approve the installation without issue once the complete technical project is presented.
  • Seasonal property: many clients use the home 3–6 months a year. In that case, the surplus offsets a good part of the months of absence. Fixed compensation contracts (≈€0.07/kWh) are more profitable than PVPC.

Areas of Marbella we cover

We cover the whole of Marbella and its municipal area: Marbella centre, Golden Mile, Nueva Andalucía, Puerto Banús, San Pedro Alcántara, Los Monteros, Elviria, Las Chapas, Nagüeles, Sierra Blanca, La Zagaleta, Cabopino, Artola and surrounding developments.

We also serve the neighbouring municipalities of Benahavís and Estepona. Service in Spanish, English and German. Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía also concentrate an established Scandinavian community (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish) that commonly searches under the term solpaneler (solar panels, in Swedish) — we serve this profile in English, with the possibility of coordinating with bilingual Swedish tax advisors when IRNR applies.

The installation process in Marbella

  1. Free technical visit: 1–2 hours, includes roof measurement, shading analysis, review of consumption history and identification of specifics (protected property, communities).
  2. Responsible declaration to Marbella Town Hall (for installations <10 kWp). No works licence is needed. It automatically includes the application for the 95% ICIO exemption.
  3. Self-consumption code (CAU) to the electricity distributor (in Marbella it is E-Distribución (Endesa), which serves the whole province of Málaga). Term: 5–10 working days for <15 kW.
  4. Installation: 1–3 days depending on size. REBT-certified team.
  5. Legalisation: CIE (electrical certificate) + registration with the Junta de Andalucía (RITSAA).
  6. Bidirectional meter: Endesa installs or reprograms it. Term 10–30 working days.

Important: E-Distribución (Endesa) serves the whole province of Málaga. We handle all the paperwork — your only responsibility is to sign the authorisation.

Frequently asked questions about Marbella

Can non-residents access the incentives?
95% ICIO: yes (it is a property-related tax, applying to all owners). IBI: Marbella does not offer a solar IBI rebate. IRPF: Spanish tax residents only (183+ days/year). Post-Brexit, British owners are treated as non-EU → IRNR at 24% instead of 19% on surplus energy. See the full guide for expats.
What if my villa is in a community with restrictive rules?
Law 10/2022 (Architectural Quality Law) and RD 244/2019 (self-consumption) allow solar installations with notification — not authorisation — to the community. If there is formal opposition, an agreement of 1/3 of the owners may be required, but in practice it is very rare for an installation to be blocked. We handle the process with the community.
Is it worth it if I only use the villa in summer?
Yes. In summer Marbella produces twice as much energy as in winter (May–September: ~170 kWh/kWp/month vs 100 kWh in winter). Since you are there during the peak production season, instantaneous self-consumption is at its maximum. In winter, the surplus is fed into the grid and compensated on your bill. A fixed compensation tariff (€0.07/kWh) works better than PVPC for seasonal use.
Can I charge an electric car with solar panels?
Yes, and it is one of the best combinations. A Tesla Model Y consumes ~15 kWh/100 km, which at €0.13/kWh is €1.95/100 km. With solar panels, if you charge during sunlight hours, the real cost is practically zero. A 6–8 kWp system covers domestic use + 10,000–15,000 km a year of electric-car driving.
How many real days of sun does Marbella have to produce?
Marbella has one of the best levels of solar irradiation in Europe. The panels produce even with clouds (60–70% on cloudy days), so real production is more consistent than the number of clear "sunny" days alone would suggest. The worst month (December) produces ~100 kWh/kWp — a 5 kWp system generates 500 kWh/month, equivalent to the consumption of an average home without electric heating. PVGIS data from the European Commission as the canonical source.
Is there any risk from proximity to the sea?
Photovoltaic solar panels have certified resistance to salt corrosion (IEC 61701 Severity 6). We install anodised aluminium structures and A4 stainless steel fixings on villas less than 500 m from the sea. The manufacturer's warranty covers corrosion for 25 years. In 15+ years on the Marbella market, we have not seen failures related to a saline environment on certified-brand equipment.
Talar ni svenska? — Do you serve Scandinavian residents in Marbella?
Yes. We serve the Scandinavian community established in Marbella (especially Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía, Nagüeles) — solpaneler (solar panels) in these areas work especially well thanks to the 1,560 kWh/kWp/year output + 95% ICIO exemption. Our team's working languages: Spanish (main), English, German. For Swedish/Norwegian/Danish we work in English, coordinating with bilingual Swedish tax advisors for non-tax-resident owners (IRNR + ICIO) when applicable.
