Real Solar Production in Málaga — PVGIS 25 Municipalities Comparison 2026

1. How we measured the production

Every published value comes from a direct query to the PVGIS v5.2 API (European Commission, JRC) using the exact coordinates of each municipality — not a generic estimate based on the provincial capital. That's the difference between this study and the approximate figures circulating online.

Metodología y fuente

Identical parameters across all 25 queries: crystalline silicon, tilt 30°, azimuth 0° (south), 14% system losses, PVGIS-SARAH2 radiation database + ERA5 meteorology, 2005-2020 window, free-standing roof mounting (not BIPV — see our pricing pillar for why this matters). Coordinates validated against each town's official street directory. PVGIS query dates: 8-25 April 2026. IBI/ICIO bonuses cross-referenced against Fundación Renovables and the 2026 municipal fiscal ordinances. Population from INE (2024-2025 padrón) and SIMA Junta de Andalucía.

Deliberate transparency: 13 of the 25 municipalities show "no bonus" because their fiscal ordinances don't include specific support for solar self-consumption — or because the data isn't verifiable against primary sources. We don't fill gaps with invented figures. We prefer an honest "—" to a fake percentage.

2. The top 5 highest-production municipalities

The five most productive towns in the province exceed the provincial average by 3-8%. They share a common feature: all are eastern coastal towns or moderate-altitude inland villages, with drier microclimates and less morning cloud cover.

  5. Rincón de la Victoria · Metro Málaga

    1,678 kWh/kWp/yr · 8,400 kWh/yr with a 5 kWp system · Population 52,454

The contrast is significant: Frigiliana beats Marbella by 11% in production. A 5 kWp system in Frigiliana generates roughly 900 additional kWh per year compared to the same system in Marbella — about €117 more annual savings.

4. Regional patterns

The province splits into six broad regions with distinct climate profiles. The Axarquía and the Eastern Costa del Sol stand out in annual yield; the inland zone has greater thermal variability but consistent winter production.

5. Municipal IBI and ICIO bonuses

Only 12 of the 25 municipalities offer IBI or ICIO bonuses for residential solar. ICIO exemption is more common than the IBI reduction. Both, when available, must be requested explicitly and meet technical requirements — they are never automatic. These bonuses apply to all property owners regardless of tax residency status.

6. Frequently asked questions

Which Málaga municipality produces the most solar energy?
Frigiliana tops the ranking with 1,732 kWh/kWp/year according to PVGIS, 11% more than the lowest-production municipality (Marbella, 1,560 kWh/kWp/year). The difference comes from local microclimates, altitude, and coastal proximity.
How is solar production calculated per municipality?
We use the official PVGIS v5.2 API (European Commission, Joint Research Centre) with the exact coordinates of each municipality, crystalline silicon, optimal tilt 30°, and 14% system losses. Data come from PVGIS-SARAH2 (radiation) and ERA5 (meteorology), 2005-2020 window.
Which municipalities offer IBI or ICIO bonuses in Málaga?
Of the 25 verified municipalities, 12 offer at least one fiscal bonus (IBI or ICIO). Cártama stands out with 25% IBI for 5 years (unique in the province) plus 80% ICIO. Málaga capital and Marbella offer 95% ICIO. The rest either have no published bonus or don't respond to verifiable enquiries.
Is Málaga's solar production better than the rest of Spain?
Málaga province produces between 1,560 and 1,732 kWh/kWp/year, clearly above the peninsular average (~1,450 kWh/kWp/year). The Levante coast and the Canary Islands are comparable; northern Spain falls below 1,200 kWh/kWp/year. Across Europe, Málaga matches or beats any Mediterranean coastal municipality.
Can I cite this dataset in an article or study?
Yes. The dataset is published under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0. We ask for visible attribution ("Solar Master — Málaga") and a link to this page as the source. If you need the data in CSV or JSON format for an editorial piece, contact us.
How much real difference does choosing the best-production municipality make?
For a typical 5 kWp installation, the difference between the top (Frigiliana) and the bottom (Marbella) is about 900 kWh/year — roughly €117 extra annual savings at average grid prices. Over 25 years, the cumulative gap exceeds €5,000.
Why do some small municipalities outperform Málaga capital?
PVGIS production depends on solar irradiance, temperature, and local cloud cover. Eastern coastal towns like Nerja, Frigiliana, or Cómpeta benefit from microclimates with less morning cloud cover and moderate altitudes that reduce panel thermal losses. Málaga capital has more sea humidity and early-morning coastal mist.
Does this data include batteries or just panels?
PVGIS production (kWh/kWp/year) is energy generated by the panels, regardless of whether you store it in a battery or feed it into the grid. To calculate real savings with or without battery, use our calculator — it includes production, consumption profile, instant self-consumption ratio, and current electricity price.
